Museums

Iziko Museums of South Africa (Iziko) is a schedule 3 public entity (not of profit) and operates 11 national museums, Planetarium, Social History Centre and three collection-specific libraries in Cape Town. The museums that make up Iziko each have their own history and character presenting extensive art, social and natural collections that reflect our diverse African heritage. Iziko is an isiXhosa word meaning 'hearth' - traditionally and symbolically the social centre where food is prepared and shared, stories told, and knowledge passed from one generation to the next. Similarly, the national museums that make up Iziko are spaces for cultural interaction, where people can gather, share, learn and connect with our history, art and natural world.

The Mandela Bay Theatre Complex, MBTC, was declared as a Schedule 3A public entity on 26 May 2021, and gazetted on 04 June 2021. The call for the new Council was issued in October 2021. The entity became operational as a declared institution on 1 April 2022 with the new Council appointed on 02 June 2022. The MBTC succeeds the previous Board of the Port Elizabeth Opera House NPC, which oversaw the longest running theatre in Africa since 1892.

The National Museum – a natural history, cultural history and art museum – was established in 1877 and is a Declared Cultural Institution, which resorts under the Department of Arts and Culture and is governed by a council.

Robben Island Museum (RIM) is a public entity responsible for managing, maintaining, presenting, developing and marketing Robben Island as a national estate and World Heritage Site. It was established by the Department of Arts and Culture in 1997 and declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The mission of the McGregor Museum is to research and conserve the natural and cultural history and diversity of the Northern Cape, and promote an awareness thereof through service excellence. The Museum's strategic objectives are: providing a transformed museum by increasing the number of museum visitors; providing outreach programmes to learners, educators and the public; providing brochures and publications for public consumption; and providing exhibitions for public viewing.
